Improving recyclability and carbon footprint

There is a major shift in the packaging industry to improve the recyclability of product packaging and also to look at ways of reducing carbon footprint of packaging.  Innovia Films is part of that process and we have launched new film ranges that aid the circular economy and reduce the use of fossil based packaging while reducing carbon footprint.

Our Propafilm™ Strata high barrier range provides options that will aid pack simplification to enable easier recycling.  They have been designed to be a standalone mono filmic solution or, to be used in laminate constructions to be ‘recycle ready’, or recyclable in countries which have the infrastructure to recycle polypropylene films.  We are already working on a large number of projects with our customers to allow for future recycling.  These include the replacement of foil and polyester film to produce functional all polyolefin laminates.

Our Encore range, is manufactured from a renewable non-food based, or recycled raw materials which lowers carbon footprint and reduces the use of fossil based resources.  Encore films are managed through ISCC PLUS.  The ISCC (International Sustainability & Carbon Certification) is a globally applicable sustainability certification system that covers all sustainable feedstocks.

Encore films will have the same properties as the equivalent fossil based BOPP film, for example high clarity and gloss, high stiffness, excellent water vapour barrier, printable and recyclable.  Encore is therefore suitable for use in all market segments currently using BOPP.

Our next step will be products that contain recycled post-consumer content. We have agreements in place and hope to be able to launch the first of these in 2021.
